Perfect seasons are rare. In fact, unheard of in baseball. Yet, in 1937 Leon Day delivered a perfect 13-0 record for the Newark Eagles, a club that featured several future Hall Of Famers. Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s Day reigned as the Negro National League’s premier hurler.

Though armed with a full arsenal of pitches, Day’s bread and butter was his fastball. His blazing speed, said to match or exceed that of Satchel Paige, made him a dominating pitcher with strikeout records unmatched in the Negro Leagues. Day regularly spent the Negro League off season playing winter ball in Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba and Mexico. In 1941 he established the Puerto Rican single game strikeout record fanning an incredible 19 hitters.

Day retired from baseball in 1954. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1995.
