Hello everyone,
I'm doing research on the Phila connection of the Negro Leagues. There were three teams that I am aware of: the Phila Hilldales, the Phila Stars, and the Phila Cuban X-Giants. If anyone could point me in the right direction of where I can find out more info about these teams I would be very grateful. My e-mail address is [email protected].
My motivation is that I have a thirst for info about the Negro Leagues. My local paper, the Phila Daily News, recently published a big spread entitled "Phila's Greatest Athletes". Nowhere is there mentioned anything about the Negro Leagues. I plan to enlighten a few people. I grow weary of our story not being told.

You might start with the weekly newspapers that covered the Negro Leagues like the Pittsburgh Courier, Chicago Defender and the Baltimore Afro-American. Many of the black-run weekly newspapers of the first half this century had a national scope and so would have covered Philadelphia sports.
The Philadelphia Tribune will be particularly useful for Philadelphia Stars research. In addition, I believe there are some primary sources (letters and other documents)at an archives in Philadelphia (possibly the Philadelphia Historical Society)relating to a former Stars player (possibly Bill Cash).
After that you might look at some of the books published on the Negro Leagues including "Fair Dealing and Clean Playing: the Hilldale Club and the Development of Black Professional Baseball, 1910-1932" written by Neil Lanctot and published by McFarland.

Yesterday, I mentioned that I thought some primary sources relating to the Negro Leagues in Philly might be found at the Philadelphia Historical Society. I don't think that's right. The Philadelphia Afro-American Musuem is a better bet.

The former Phila Star players still living in the Phila are just a great bunch of men. For you investigative sources try the Phila Library (52nd + Chestnut St branch), and the Phila Tribune newspaper. You never know, you might bump into Bill "Ready" Cash and not know it. These men have tremendous character. I have been a big fan of these gentlemen since 1993 when I went to NY to their convention.
