My neighbor mentioned to me that her grandfather, whose name escapes me right now, might have played in the Negro Leagues. Any one know where to look to find that kind of info?

Thanks.

There are several places you could look…

(1) Jim Rileys "Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Leagues" contains a wealth of information about players, both those who gained some measure of fame and the more obscure players as well. It is still available in many discount bookstores and can be ordered from Amazon Books online (http://www.amazon.com).

(2) Post a message with the player's name on this discussion forum. There's a pretty good chance that you will get an answer from one of the other members.

(3) Old newspaper microfilm records at your local library are a great source of info…including box scores. It is likely that you can find microfilm copies of the Chicago Defender or Pittsburgh Courier in larger public or university libraries, and you might also want to check the microfilm records of the local black newspaper that published in your area during the period.

Does anyone know of a player by the name of Walter (Poncho) Mobley playing for any of the Detroit teams? Or maybe for a team in the South not sure for which one.

Greetings to all the Negro League enthusiasts and thank you for this forum. I'm attempting to locate information on a Baltimore Black Sox player named Charles Evans, a native of the the US Virgin Islands who also is my grandfather. I believe he played between 1927 and 1930. All I have is a picture of him in his uniform. Does anyone have any roster information on the Black Sox during that time period? Thanks for your help.

I am a historian researching the development of African Americans in sports in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. I am especially interested in amateur and professional leages in Kentucky. Therefore, I would appreciate any information or resources that could be provided.

Moburns,

I have a record of a Hubert Glenn who played at least one season (1954) in Western Canada. He's in the team picture at the page below:
