Gentlemen:
We are in the process of creating a small display for our public library, that will be donated to the African-American community center in our town, Winchester, Virginia, regarding our premier native black athlete — Spots Poles (1887-1962). Is it possible that any former league members would be willing to talk on the phone (at my expense), or email about any memories of this fine ball player? Also, we are looking for any photographs available of Spots. We cannot afford to purchase original photos and printed materials, so we will have to have good copies made of items loaned to us. Spots played from 1909-23 for the Philadelphia Giants,the New York Lincoln Giants, Brooklyn Royal Giants, Lincoln Stars…
Any help would be vastly appreciated by our small community.
