WE PLAYED FOR THE DETROIT BLACK SOX IN THE EARLY 40'S. TURKEY WAS A COACH WHEN TRAVELLED TO ARKANSAS, MISSISSIPPI, AND NEW ORLEANS. IN NEW ORLEANS WE STAYED IN A ROOMING HOUSE THAT HAD A LARGE BEDROOM THAT I SHARED WITH TURKEY AND FOUR OTHER PLAYERS. WE PLAYED THE BROWN OR BLACK PELICANS. AFTER CHANGING INTO STREET CLOTHES AT THE ROOMING HOUSE THE OLDER GUYS HEADED FOR THE STREETS. TURKEY, WE CALLED HIM "GOBBLER"WARNED ME NOT TO GO OUT. HE SAID THERE WERE WICKED WOMEN OUT THERE AND I MIGHT GET HURT. I WAS ABOUT 17 AT THE TIME AND I TOOK HIS ADVICE AND STAYED IN AND TALKED BASEBALL WITH HIM. TURKEY, WHO DID NOT SMOKE OR DRINK WAS A VERY MORAL PERSON.

I am a novice collector on the negro leagues. Have done talks at my children's schools during black history month. I see that Turkey Stearns is going into the hall of fame this year. Would it be okay if I sent you items later on to autograph. Please let me know what you charge.
