Eugene Bremer, was a pitcher, in 1936 he was a member of the Cincinnati Tigers. This team consisted of Porter Moss, Provens Brafley, Neil Robinson, Willie Jefferson, Marlin Carter, J. Payne, Lloyd (Ducky) Davenport, Olan (Jelly) Taylor, Howard Easterling, Junius (Rainey) Bibbs, Ted (Double Duty) Radcliffe Sonny (Sweets) Harris, Jess Houston, Josh Johnson. The Tigers were led by their hard-hitting infielders. Taylor finished the season with a .285 average, whileEasterling batted .326 and Carter .387. Bibbs led the team with a .404 average.
Negro baseball teams kept busy schedules that included many long hours on the roads. Overnight trips were not uncommon, nor were highway mishaps. The most tragic accident occurred on September 7, 1942, when two members of teh Cleveland Buckeys, Ulysses (Buster) Brown and Raymond (Smokey) Owens were killed when a truck rammed the back of the car in which they were riding. The team was returning from a game in buffalo against the New York Black Yankees. Also injuried in the crash were three other players, pitchers Eugene Bremmer, Herman (Lefty) Watts and Alonzo Boone, and business manager Wilbur Hayes. The Cleveland Buckeys palyed and defeated the Grays for the 45 World Series. Beginning with Willie Jefferson in game one, the Buckeys' starting pitchers thoroughly dominated the Series, throwing four complete games enroute to a stunning sweep. The heavyhitting Grays scored a grand total of three runs in the Series, getting one off jefferson in the opener and two off Gene Bremmer in game two. George Jefferson and Frank Carswell fired four-hit shutouts in games three and four, respectively, to finish matters.
