Goose Tatum started his career with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1941 before going to the Clowns a couple of years later. He als played in the 1947 ALL-STAR game. As a first baseman he was known to have good hands.

Tatum has been called by many of his former teammates and opponents as one of the best defensive first basemen ever. His bat was his problem; his hitting was only barely adequate. He was a great basketball player with the Globetrotters.
