It's been a long time since I was able to get back here and post how things are going…of course when one is working 3rd shift it does make it impossible at times to do anything but eat,sleep and go to work.
Anyways,after taking about almost 6 months off I continued my conversations with some of my good friends from the Negro Leagues this past December… Rev. Harold "Hooks" Tinker is 95 and the man who discovered Josh Gibson is still going strong,and for those who were lucky enough to get a few pics and other things from Mr.Tinker before last year,well your very fortunate because he is long out of any cards or pictures to autograph…Willie Grace,81, is one of two Cleveland Buckeye players that are still around (as to my best knowledge) the other is Sam Jethroe,they both played for the Champion Buckeyes 1945 squad…Josh Gibson Jr is keeping busy,last time I talked with Him,he was getting ready to go down to Arkansas to speak…
Wilmer Fields is doing good as well,not too many gents left from those great Homestead Grays teams either – Willie Pope,Cecil Kaiser,and maybe a few others…but Wilmer's keeping busy – and he has about 5 large posters left which were autographed by about 42 Negro League players,many of whom are no longer with us,the going price for this item is $200…but they're worth it,a few of the players include Larry Doby,Monte Irvin,Buck Leonard & Leon Day,I added one to my personal collection here recently.
Bill "ready" Cash sounds like he could still toss a strike from his catching stance..the former Phila. Stars hero is still very talkative and as
classy in his memories as ever! Cowan " Bubba " Hyde proclaimed loudly that he's 90 and doing very nicely since recouping from some hospital time last year…I had a chance to also talk with Max Manning of The Newark Eagles,and a few others…but that's it for now…take care and keep the memories alive!

FYI Other Buckeyes still alive include Al Smith, Nath McClinic, Joe Caffie, Hank Presswood, Marvin Williams, Earnest Long, and the Smith Bros, Quincy and (I think) Gene. I'm doing research on the NL players of Cleveland, that's why I know. Also, Mr. Herbert Barnhill, 86 yrs young, played with the Cleve Bears, and Leonard Wiggs played with the Cleve Reds in 1930-32!

THE EVENT, SPONSORED BY WORLD OF SPORTS FIRST INTERNATIONAL AFRO-AMERICAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME & GALLERY WILL BE HELD AT COBO ARENA, STARTING A 6:00PM.THE PLAYERS TO BE HONORED ARE CECIL KAISER (GRAYS), RON TEASLEY (CUBANS), JOE DOUSE (MONARCHS) AND JIM BARNES (MONARCHS).
