Eigth Annual Pop Lloyd Awards Ceremonies Scheduled For October 7th
Harlem Rens Stars To Be Honored
The Eighth Annual John Henry “Pop” Lloyd Humanitarian Awards and Lecture are scheduled for October 7, 2000 at the Atlantic City Convention Center, 6:00-10:00PM.
The distinguished historian, Dr. Joseph Dorinson, from Long Island University will deliver the 2000 John Henry “Pop” Lloyd Lecture, speaking on “The Black Athlete As Hero In American Culture.”
The historical focus of the evening will be to honor the Harlem Renaissance Five, the first great professional basketball team. The Rens’ struggle and
achievement parallels the history of Negro League baseball. Invited guests include the five remaining members of the Ren’s team.
Humanitarian Award winners will be:
- Legendary Delta Blues musician, David “Honeyboy” Edwards, who will perform;
- Robert Peterson, famed author of “Only The Ball Was White” and “Cages To Jump Shots”;
- Richard Lapchick, Director of the Center For The Study Of Sports In Society; and
- James Usry, former Mayor of Atlantic City and Rens standout.
