Turkey Stearnes To Join Baseball’s Greats In Hall Of Fame
Cooperstown Induction Set For July 23

On July 23 the National Baseball Hall of Fame will have one more inductee from the Negro Leagues. Voting at their annual meeting in Cooperstown yesterday the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee voted to include Negro League star Turkey Stearnes in the HOF class of 2000.
A hard-hitting outfielder with the Detroit Stars throughout the 1920s, Stearnes consistently compiled batting averages better than .350. During the 1930s, while playing with the Detroit Stars and Chicago American Giants, the Tennessee native made four appearances in the East-West All-Star Classic, the Negro Leagues’ annual showcase of its premier talent.
