Historic Baseball Game to Be Re-Enacted in Piscataway, New Jersey

From 1933 through 1950, the Negro Leagues assembled their best players to hold their own All Star Game – similar to that of their Major League counterparts. These games included players such as James "Cool Papa" Bell, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, "Turkey" Stearns, "Mule" Suttles, Leon Day, Buck Leonard, Ray Dandridge and others.
On Sunday, May 7, 2000 at 1 PM, join us at the Johnson Park Hardball Field in Piscataway as Little League players from New Brunswick’s ACE program recreate a fictional East-West All Star classic, featuring "dream teams" of Negro League greats. Each Little Leaguer will represent a real player from the Negro Leagues and will have a chance to say a few words about who they represent. In attendance at the game will also be former Negro League players. The playing field is located in the park between Cedar Lane and Rte. 18/Metlars Lane.
Admission is free, food and snacks will be available for purchase. For information or directions, call 732-745-4177 (voice), 732-745-3888 (TTY). The game site is accessible, and the services of a sign language intepreter are available at no cost, with two weeks notice.
The game is being played in conjunction with the Cornelius Low House/Middlesex County Museum Exhibit Somebody to Cheer For: Black Professional Baseball and African American Community Life in New Jersey 1860-1950. The exhibit is open to the public Tuesday – Friday 1- 4 PM and Sundays 1-4 PM. It will remain on display at the Museum until July 30, 2000. Groups and schools can arrange tours and workshops by calling the Museum.
