Former Newark Eagles Star Rufus Lewis Has Passed Away
Legendary pitcher compiled a 38-15 record during three seasons with the Eagles.

Rufus Lewis, right handed pitching ace who compiled an 18-3 record during the Newark Eagles’ 1946 championship season, passed away last Saturday in Detroit at the age of 80. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1919, Lewis began his professional baseball career in 1936 with the powerful Pittsburgh Crawfords squad, but is primarily known for his phenominal performances with Newark during the 1946, ’47’ and ’48 seasons.
Funeral services will be held at Gospel Truth Church at 18000 Wyoming Street in Detroit on Tuesday, December 28, 1999. Family hour is set at 10:30 a.m. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m.
